Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND)

At Monkston, all pupils are recognised as individuals with different strengths and needs. Sometimes children are identified with particular learning needs that are not being met through the mainstream curriculum. The school supports these children in different ways, which includes differentiated activities, small group and one to one work, pre-teaching and targeted interventions.

Monkston maintains a register of children with Special Educational Needs, which helps to ensure children receive the appropriate level of support.

Parents will be informed if their child needs to go on to the register. The categories on the Special Educational Needs (SEN) register are:

School Support

The child will receive help that is additional to or different from the support generally given to other children in their year group. The purpose of SEND School Support is to help children achieve the outcomes or learning objectives set for them by the school. Parents will be invited in to discuss this further with their child’s class teacher. Occasionally, the school may feel that a child requires a more coordinated and personalised plan to meet a child’s special educational need. At this point, the school will create a SEND Support Plan, which also follows the graduated approach. The approach follows the cycle of assessing the child, planning, providing provision and then reviewing outcomes.

Education Health Care Plan

Some children will have special needs which require a higher level of support or adult expertise to manage. It may therefore be necessary to apply for an Education Health Care Plan. This ensures that the school is meeting the child's more complex needs and that all agencies involved with the child have an input.

If your child is on the Special Educational Needs register you will be informed.
